Home Rule Petition
The Georgia Constitution provides citizens with the ability for force a referendum on rezoning, ordinances, and other matters approved by their local County Commissioners. It is called the Home Rule Provision of the Constitution.
The Home Rule Provision requires that citizens that disagree with a Commission action gather signed petitions from at least 10% of the number of registered voters in the last General Election. In the last General Election (2024) there were 109,703 registered voters in Coweta County. Therefore we must gather 10,970 petitions. We are shooting for 14,000 to show overwhelming support for overturning the Commission’s vote. We have received over 7,000 signed petitions to date.
Getting the 14,000 signed petitions will start the clock on the county’s 60 days to validate the petition and voters. Then the Probate Judge must call for a special election within 10 to 60 days of the filing date.
How can you help? First, if you haven’t signed a petition, do that. The current dates and locations are listed on the Events Page. Second, if you arrive early, we can train you to assist in gathering petitions.
